We recently purchased a LIFX bulb and trialled it at home. The bulb was bought through the LIFX online store and arrived fairly quickly and in impressive packaging. The cost was $100 US plus postage.
We installed the LIFX in our bathroom for some mood lighting - a task that anyone could undertake as this is simply a globe, no technical knowledge was needed. The bulb worked immediately as a normal light but in order to use the additional features, that is, to be able to cycle through the colour changes, we had to download an app. I have a Samsung and my wife an Apple and the app was available for download on both phones.
Once we had the app the LIFX bulb was fun and easy to use. The bathroom was bathed (pun intended) in different colour light, delighting our seven year old. Though the app for the Samsung had glitches that did get frustrating at times we were able to work through them.
Although simple to use, after the novelty wore off I must admit we haven't used the app. The bulb is working just fine as a normal white light and it's been nice to set it to default to a soft light without any glare, but as for the colours, we really have no reason to play with them on a day to day basis.
If you're after a product that changes the lighting colour of a room and have an actual need for this functionality we would highly recommend the LIFX bulb. It is easy to use and works without any major glitches and would be worth the money considering how expensive some lighting on the market can get that does the same job. However, if like us you don't need this product but simply think it may be a bit of fun, then you could probably spend your money elsewhere and get more bang for your buck.
