Scandinavian style is probably best known by the popular IKEA store, it has, however, had a much longer history. From 1951 to 1970 the Lunning Prize was awarded to two Scandinavian designers each year. This helped shape the concept of what Scandinavian design is and what defines it as an interior design look.
Scandinavian style is known for its simplicity. It focuses on utility and beauty meaning it has an uncluttered and streamlined look and feel. Phrases such as warm, functional and elegant are often used to describe Scandinavian style design.
Lighting tends to be minimal in its ornamentation and made of natural materials. Wood is a very popular material in Scandinavian style design and as such light fittings are often made of timber or other natural materials.
Natural light is also important in this decorating style which is why curtains are often absent in Scandinavian style design.
Scandinavian style is very functional and liveable. Its layered natural textures give the feel of luxury and as a design style it has a lot of merit.
In Canberra we experience cold winters, however, unlike in Scandinavian countries, many of our homes have not been built to provide comfort through these cold months. As such, we have to adapt Scandinavian style a little to make it work for us.
For example, rather than eschewing curtains and window fittings, skylights can help us to achieve an abundance of natural light. Sky lights have come a long way in recent times with new models Such as here and here.
Similarly, because our houses tend to be designed with smaller and less windows than might be seen in Scandinavian homes, to achieve the look we may need to add extra lamps or light fittings to ensure adequate lighting and a feeling of warmth. This may mean that extra powerpoints are needed to ensure cords aren't trailing across rooms - a sure fire way to ruin a minimal look!
With a little effort and creativity this style can be achieved in Canberra. As always, we are very happy to talk through your ideas and work to turn your space into what you want it to be.
